Active Components for Fast Relief

The action of Lugol’s solution is based on two active components – iodine and potassium iodide.

Active Ingredients

1. Elemental Iodine: 1 g per 100 mg of solution provides intensive antibacterial action. It is effective against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, streptococci, staphylococci, E. coli, and Klebsiella.
2. Potassium iodide: 2 g per 100 mg of solution is the key that unlocks the whole solution. On its own, elemental iodine is non-polar and hydrophobic (water-fearing). Potassium iodide helps elemental iodine to dissolve in liquids.

Other Ingredients

• Purified water is the base of the solution.
• Glycerin works as a soothing and cooling agent.

Indications for Use

Lugol’s solution is an effective symptomatic medication for various infections of the throat, including tonsillitis, laryngitis, and pharyngitis.

Use Directions and Safety Measures

Lugol’s solution is used on mouth and throat membranes only. The medication is designed for adults and children above 5 years old.

Dosage and Administration

For proper administration, soak a tampon in the solution and apply it on inflamed or damaged areas in the mouth or throat. The frequency of application is 3-4 times a day. The duration of the treatment depends on the severity of symptoms.

Warnings and Precautions

• The medication is for topical use only. Do not inhale or swallow the medication.
• In the case of laryngitis, Lugol’s solution should be used with caution because of the risks of laryngospasm.
• Avoid getting into the eyes.
