Use cotton wool soaked with an antiseptic solution only to clean the skin around the wound. Do not rub the wound itself. To help stop bleeding, you can make a pressure pad by tightly wrapping cotton wool in several layers of sterile bandage and applying it to the bleeding area, but only through a layer of bandage or sterile gauze.
